Due to the excesses of summer and its weather conditions, our plants and crops have had to be watered practically daily. But now that autumn is approaching, what should we do? It's time for the temperatures to cool down, the rains to begin… And of course, while it's true that our workload with the soil decreases, we mustn't forget about it. Discover with Deco&Lemon the care you should give your garden during the season of fallen leaves!

Urban garden care in autumn: fertilize your surface

The nutrients in your soil have been depleted and need to be replenished for your crops to thrive. If you have an urban garden, buy compost in bags and, regardless of the type you choose, spread it in a layer about 5 centimeters thick on the soil. Mix it into the top layer, as this will help your plants grow healthy.

Plantings in urban gardens for autumn

Do you think you can't plant anything in autumn? That's a myth! It's true that spring is the best time for crops, as they have several months of warm temperatures and can grow perfectly. However, there are also a few examples of species that prefer the autumn season, such as the following:

  • Garlic and onions , which can be planted directly in the ground.
  • Broad beans and peas , which must be covered and protected from frost.
  • Celery. Ideally, it should be sown in a pot and transplanted later when it has reached at least 5 cm in height.
  • Radishes and chard . Other examples that are ideal for autumn, but require greater protection from frost.

The vegetable garden in autumn requires protection from the cold

As we have already mentioned in the previous heading, the low temperatures and frosts characteristic of autumn are also a challenge to overcome in terms of garden care.

For example, if you've recently bought fruit trees or shrubs, especially if they're young and your home is in a frost-prone area, protecting your plants is essential. Greenhouse covers , for instance, will keep out rain and wind.
