When to stake the plants in your urban garden

Some plants, due to their youth, growth rate, and/or the amount of fruit they produce, need extra support to prevent their stems from breaking. While we often refer to this support as sticks, its proper name is a stake, and just as a human tutor guides a child, these stakes help plants thrive. But do you know when to use them? Find out with Deco&Lemon!

Which plants use trellises?

Regardless of their design, plant supports are made to guide plants until they need them . Some are better suited for small pots, while others are designed to be inserted into the soil. However, they aren't necessary for all plant species. In fact, below we indicate which ones require their use:
  • Horticultural plants. That is, tomato plants, cucumbers, pumpkins, and peppers.
  • They all require a support to climb on, and the tutors achieve this goal.
  • Trees and palm trees. If these species have been planted in the ground, it is recommended that, during the first year, they have a support stake to prevent problems in strong winds.
  • Plants that grow towards the light. Species that need sunlight to survive and orient themselves have stems that elongate. As they do so, they weaken and can fall over under their own weight.

Tips for placing the tutor

It might seem like a simple task, but correctly placing a plant stake is just as important as ensuring the material is strong enough to withstand strong winds. That said, the first piece of advice is not to place the stake too close to the stem . Otherwise, you won't give the plant enough room to grow. The distance will depend on the size of the plant. Generally, the stake for a tree, palm, or climbing plant (the taller species) should be placed about 5-10 cm from the main stem. For smaller plants, about 2-3 cm is sufficient. The stake can be removed once the plants have become strong enough and, of course, are no longer growing sideways. However, vegetables require this extra support throughout the growing season . Don't remove it! Depending on the wind strength in your area, you should insert the stake at a greater or lesser depth. We hope our advice has been helpful.
